Mining engineer Léon Mathieu Henri de Somzée (Liège, January 31, 1837 - Spa, August 23, 1901), member of parliament for the Brussels district from 1884 to 1892, was founding president of this major international competition for science and industry. He enjoyed a highly successful career, mainly linked to the emerging exploitation of gas.
