In 1465, Louis XI ordered the burning and razing of Chaumont to punish Pierre d'Amboise for rebelling against royal power during the "League of the Public Good". Back in favor, the d'Amboise family was allowed to rebuild the château. His son Charles I d'Amboise undertook the work between 1469 and 1481, building the north wing facing the Loire, which has now disappeared, and the west wing, which still exists. The entrance gate, preceded by a double drawbridge, is surrounded by two massive round towers with machicolations and parapets. Contrary to custom, the central keep was abandoned in favor of the west tower, known as the Tour d'Amboise, intended to display the lord of the manor's standard. Traces in the interior wall of the west wing indicate that a carpentry gallery served the upstairs rooms from the stairwell. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Chaumont-sur-LoirePrice
