No other plane quite encapsulates the British spirit as much as the Spitfire. The British single-seat fighter aircraft was the brainchild of Supermarine's chief designer Reginald Joseph Mitchell. The Supermarine Spitfire, also known as the 'Spit', was used by the RAF and other Allied countries during and after WWII. A masterpiece of aerodynamic engineering, it had a linear engine, retractable landing gear, distinctive elliptical wings and an enclosed cockpit. The Spitfire's strength lay in its speed, flexibility and power. Although it was just one of the aircraft involved in WWII, the Spitfire achieved its legendary status defending our shores and securing Britain's aerial victory during the decisive Battle of Britain.
