Drobeta-Turnu Severin is a Danubian city located below the famous Iron Gate Gorge. It is a city with Roman roots and numerous monuments testifying to its multicultural past. The city was founded by the Romans in a place where there was a convenient crossing over the Danube. In the 2nd century AD the longest bridge in the Empire was built here. Trajan's Bridge, the ruins of which can still be seen today, was over 1.2 km long. A reminder of the period of Roman rule in this area is also the archaeological site of the Drobeta Roman Camp.
The biggest attractions of Drobeta-Turnu Severin are the ruins of the Severin fortress rising on a hill on the bank of the Danube. In the past, the stronghold guarded the crossing over the Danube, now it is a picturesque viewpoint, and the surrounding park is a popular recreational spot.
