The town was besieged and taken by the French in 1654; the fortifications were dismantled to prevent them from being used by the Spanish. The construction of new fortifications began in 1669, based on plans by Vauban, who visited the site ten years later. Fort Libéria was built on a mountainside overlooking the town to the north. Work continued throughout the 18th century (Porte de France in 1783, Porte d'Espagne in 1791). https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villefranche-de-Conflent
