Inaugurated in 1895, the Maison du peuple in ELOUGES, part of DOUR, Province of Hainaut, Belgium, was owned by the ELOUGES cooperative union ordre économie. The house included a bakery, a grocery store, a butcher's shop and an office. One room was set up as the PEOPLE's house. The store was accessible to cooperative staff, some of whom received tokens as wages, which were exchanged for various goods.
Cooperatives were also at the origin of the Maisons du Peuple (People's Houses), buildings designed primarily to house the educational and propaganda functions of the labor movement as a whole (party, union, mutual, cooperative). These cooperatives disappeared in the 1970s and 1980s.
