On August 12 and 13, 1944, a detachment of General Leclerc's 2nd armored division - the Roumiantzoff armored column - which had just liberated Alençon and was on its way to Argentan, joined by the Putz sub-group, clashed violently with tanks of the IXth Panzerdivision hiding in the Écouves forest. Colonel Rémy's 18-year-old son and eighteen of his fellow soldiers were killed. Three Sherman tanks were lost in the fighting; one of them, hit by a German anti-tank at a place called Les Gateys, now stands at the Croix de Médavy crossroads to commemorate these events (commune of Fontenai-les-Louvets). https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/For%C3%AAt_d%27%C3%89couvesPhilippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque, better known as General Leclerc, born Philippe de Hauteclocque on November 22, 1902 in Belloy-Saint-Léonard (Somme) and died on November 28, 1947 near Colomb-Béchar (French Algeria), was a French soldier and one of the principal military leaders of Free France during the Second World War.
