Originally known as Forum Julii, the public square of Julius (by which he meant Caesar), this Roman city was founded in 49 BC to counter the omnipotence of Massilia, and was later named Colonia Octavanorum by Augustus in 27 BC to accommodate the veterans of the Legio VIII Augusta. Equipped under Tiberius, it declined until the 4th century, when the bishopric was established, the second largest in France after Lyon.
