LE PICOTIN advertising token based on a Luxembourg 10-centime coin. The exact production date of this token remains unknown and varies from source to source. R. Weiller notes that the coins were illegally countermarked before 1889 (p. 153). This type of countermark is mainly found on 19th century bronze coins. The majority of coins hallmarked with the Picotin aperitif name come from Italy and England. Coins from Spain, Greece and Luxembourg are less common. Luxembourg coins are countermarked on the reverse, while the vast majority of these advertising tokens are hallmarked on the right-hand side. Only the 1860 and 1854 vintages of Luxembourg 10 centimes have been used as advertising tokens.
