Joshua Abraham “Emperor Norton I” Norton. Self proclaimed Emperor of America. Born in England. Went with his parents at 2 years old to English colony in Africa. After his parent died he took his inheritance and move to San Francisco. Using the money in Real estate. He made a bad investment that left him near destitute. After a disapointing battle in the courts to try to rectify his errored investment. He denounce the US Government and declared himself "Emperor Norton I" He became a celebrity type figure in San Francisco. Often given free meals and finialcial support by citizens that found him entertaining. He died after colapsing on the street as he was headed to a scientific lecture. Born 1818 died 1880 Buried in Colma. They estimate 30,000 people attended his services.
