Lieutenant-Colonel Oliver North was a US Marine Corps officer  infamous for his involvement in the Iran-Contra affair. This was a political scandal during the Reagan administration, in which North claimed partial responsibility for the sale of weapons through intermediaries to Iran, with the profits being channeled to the Contras in Nicaragua. His testimony in July 1988 during hearings of a joint congressional committee was televised to the world, catapulting North into the spotlight. He was eventually found guilty and convicted of three felony charges, although the convictions were subsequently vacated and reversed, with all charges against him dismissed in 1991 on the grounds of immunity. North was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with Combat V (Valor) and two Purple Hearts for his actions as a platoon commander during the Vietnam War. The Silver Star award is represented in this unique silver round.
