The Orcolat ("orcaccio", derogatory of the Friulian orcul, "ogre") is a monstrous being that popular tradition indicates as the cause of the earthquakes in Friuli. Orcolat is a recurring figure especially in the stories of popular tradition. He would live locked up in the mountains of Carnia, any sudden shaking would cause an earthquake.
According to tradition, Orcolat lived in the mountains grazing pigs and other animals. One day he found mushrooms and ate them. But those mushrooms were poisonous. So, exhausted from the terrible abdominal pain, L'Orcolat fell into a deep sleep. Without the ogre, hordes of criminals came down from the mountains and destroyed everything, setting the mountains on fire. The Orc, however, one day woke up disturbed by that din and chased the brigands.
The inhabitants of Bordano when they heard it went up the mountain bringing gifts to appease the Orc. But they found the Orcolat asleep, surrounded by thousands of butterflies. So the inhabitants of Bordano painted many butterflies on the walls of their houses, so the ogre, in order not to destroy them, walks on tiptoe in the mountains.
Merged medal, made in 1976 to commemorate the devastation of the Friuli earthquake which devastated the territory between the provinces of Udine and Pordenone on 06-05-1976.
