Although these tokens are relatively common in South Africa, their purpose is not currently documented. The most popular theory holds that they were "hut tax" token that were used as a receipt for the payment of a levy on the hits of black South Africans imposed by the Union of South Africa government.A larger and far more common 4461 variety is also available.
Silver-coloured examples are known that appear to be made from copper-nickel.
