This token is listed in Hern's Handbook on South African Tokens (Second Edition 2009) as #785a on page 299.Although these tokens are relatively common in South Africa, their purpose is not currently documented. The most popular theory holds that they were "hut tax" token that were used as a receipt for the payment of a levy on the huts of black South Africans imposed by the Union of South Africa government.
A smaller and far less common 4462 variety is mentioned in some sources.
