SAILOR COLLEGE
Commemorative medal of the 125th anniversary, 1982.
In 1819, under the Dutch Regime, the "Zeemans Coliegie" was founded.
It consisted of "sailing and resting sea captains" and died a peaceful death in 1827.
The current Sailor College was founded in 1857.
It was then only accessible to captains.
At the beginning of 1858 there were 78 (all Belgian!).
Later, all merchant navy officers were admitted and the Sailor College evolved into
a professional association for merchant navy officers.
The coat of arms on the front is a representation of that in the stairwell of the town hall.
