Embossed in the centre is the rising sun with sprays of laurel below on either side . Above the sun and its rays are embossed the year 1965 and above that along the rim `Raksha Medal' in Devnagri script.

This was awarded to members of the military, police and para-military forces in recognition of service in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. It was instituted vide the President’s Secretariat Notification No 14-Pres/65 dated 26 Jan 67 as amended vide Notification No 73-Pres/71 dated 14 Dec 71.The eligibility was:
- All Armed Forces personnel who were borne on the effective strength of the Armed Forces on the 5 Aug 65 and had rendered service for 180 days or more on that date
- Personnel of the units of Para-military forces as were under the operational control of the Army and had rendered service for 180 days or more on 5 Aug 1965; and
- Personnel of the units of Para-military forces who were operationally committed and were in the areas which qualify for Samar Seva Star 1965, subject to fulfilling the condition regarding length of service as (b) above, can be awarded posthumously.
Riband Orange in colour, divided into four equal parts by three vertical stripes, each 3 mm in width of red, dark blue and light blue.
