Pigeon racing - and in particular pigeon competitions - is an institution in the province of Liège. It's not surprising that a popular daily newspaper like "La Meuse" is associated with such contests.
For all you need to know about pigeon racing in the Liège region, read "Li Vî Bleû" by François Walthéry and Raoul Cauvin, preferably the Liège Walloon edition, of course...
The newspaper La Meuse was founded on New Year's Eve 1856 in Liège by four industrialists: the banker Gérard Nagelmackers, Félix Capitaine and the knights Léon and Charles de Thier. The first issue came out of a small workshop in rue du Pot d'Or on January 7, 1856. Four pages thick, with a print run of a thousand, it cost 20 centimes. The first line-engraved portrait appeared in 1872; the first photograph in 1893; the first Albert rotary press in 1898. In 1910, the first sports section appeared. The newspaper expands.
