One, above, with the planisphere known after the discoveries of the Portuguese in the Atlantic, Indian and part of the Pacific oceans, and five compass roses, with the cross of Christ, marking the extension of the Portuguese geographic space at the time. Below, four Portuguese caravels, accompanied by the caption "And if there was more world there would arrive".

This medal is part of a luxury 999 silver series issued with a total of 4,000 in 1983 by the now defunct Portuguese and Oporto based bank Banco Pinto & Sotto Mayor and which includes 6 further traditional silver proof medals of 40 mm diameter, 999 silver and 30 grs of weight, each by different designers. The mint of this stamped and then hand finished medal 8 cm wide was jeweler Manuel Alcino, as per catalogue, one page attached as a photo. The mint for the proof coins was Manuel Moreira dos Santos.
