The Abbey of Saint-Amand, originally the Abbey of Elnon, located in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux (Nord), was a Benedictine abbey in operation from 639 to 1790. From the 9th century onwards, it was an important cultural center, with a library and scriptorium producing manuscripts such as Charles the Bald's Second Bible, and famous schoolmasters such as Milon (d. 872) and Hucbald (d. 930).One of the oldest abbeys in France, it was burnt down several times, so much so that annalists have divided its history according to the major periods between each fire.
