The bunker, built by Nazi Germany under the code name Kraftwerk Nord West (Powerplant Northwest) between March 1943 and July 1944, was originally intended as a launch facility for the V-2 ballistic missile. It was designed to accommodate more than 100 missiles at a time and to launch up to 36 missiles per day.
The facility would have incorporated a liquid oxygen plant and a bomb-proof station to allow delivery of missiles and supplies from production facilities in Germany. It was built using the labor of thousands of prisoners of war and conscripted workers used as slave laborers.
The bunker was never completed following repeated bombings by British and American air forces as part of Operation Crossbow against the German V-weapons program. The attacks caused extensive damage and rendered the bunker unusable for its original purpose. A portion of the bunker was later completed for use as a liquid oxygen plant. It was captured by Allied forces in early September 1944, although its true purpose was not discovered by the Allies until after the war. Instead, the V-2s were launched from mobile batteries based at Meillerwagen that were much less vulnerable to air attack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockhaus_d%27%C3%89perlecques
