The Bleuet de France is France's symbol of remembrance and solidarity with veterans, war victims, widows and orphans. The sale of cornflowers on November 11 and May 8 is used to finance social works in their aid.A similar tradition exists in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries (except Australia, where rosemary is the symbol of Gallipoli), where the flower symbolizing veterans is the poppy, because poppies, whose red color is reminiscent of blood, grew in large numbers on the battlefields of Flanders. The origin of this choice is John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields, written on May 3, 1915 on the death of a friend:
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place..."
Or, in French:
"Dans les champs de Flandre, les coquelicots oscillent au vent, entre les rangées de croix qui marquent nos tombes..." (In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place...).
