Mr. Gayant (meaning "Giant" in Picardy dialect). Born in 1530, his body was made of wicker by the Douai guild of manneliers (wicker basket makers). The following year, the fruit-growers' guild built a giantess, Mme Gayant. In 1720, their children Jacquot, Fillon and Binbin (a girl and two boys) were born. In 1770, the Bishop of Arras forbade this procession, as it commemorated the victory of the town of Douai over the French on June 16, 1479. He instituted a new one to celebrate the anniversary of the French entry into Douai in 1667. However, the Gayant family, considered to be profane, was not to appear again, and Gayant and his family did not reappear until 1801. In 1821, they were given the costumes we know today. Because of its height (8.50 m) and weight (370 kg), six men are needed to carry it.Price
