The Caverne du Dragon is located on the Chemin des Dames, in the commune of Oulches-la-Vallée-Foulon, in the Aisne département of the Hauts-de-France region. It was a strategic location during the First World War, and more specifically during the Nivelle offensive, during the Battle of the Observatories.It was the Germans who, during their occupation of the cavern, nicknamed it the Dragon's Cave (Drachenhöhle in German). The flames and sparks from the machine-gun fire coming out of the cavern's entrances during the fighting reminded them of the flames spat out by dragons from their caves.
