The Aiguille du Midi cable car was called in the various studies and preparatory documents for the project "chemin de fer aérien de l'Aiguille du Midi", "chemin de fer funiculaire Chamonix-Aiguille du Midi-Vallée Blanche", "chemin de fer aérien Chamonix-Aiguille du Midi-Mont Blanc", "chemin de fer aérien Chamonix-Pèlerins-Aiguille du Midi" or "funiculaire aérien Chamonix-Aiguille du Midi".
When it was put into service in 1924, it was called the "Aiguille du Midi aerial funicular" and then the "Aiguille du Midi cable car". In the 1950's, at the end of its operation, the cable car then disused is called "téléférique des Glaciers" or "téléférique de l'Aiguille du Midi - les Glaciers" - from the name of the station planned to be intermediate but finally used as a terminus - to distinguish it from the future cable car then under construction from Chamonix.
In its name, it uses the now obsolete spelling of "téléférique", a term created at the beginning of the 20th century during a period that saw the popularization of this new type of mechanical lift with the beginnings of winter sports. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%A9l%C3%A9f%C3%A9rique_de_l%27Aiguille_du_Midi
