Vauban was again on tour in 1700 on the border of the Alps to improve the defensive systems, and, in collaboration with the best military engineers and the greatest generals, he reinforced and improved the fortifications of the city and started the construction of a belt of forts around it to defend it, exploiting the relief of the mountains to occupy the key points allowing to watch the accesses. He also provided Briançon with barracks, thus calming the fears of the population caused by the devastating passages of the people at arms. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian%C3%A7on
