Comment

This medal celebrates 100 years since the founding of the Free Ukrainian University. It was established abroad by Ukrainian intellectuals who emigrated to other countries, and had Ukrainian as its language of instruction. The university brought together many leading Ukrainian scholars of the twentieth century, becoming a scientific and educational institution for the Ukrainian diaspora who did not want to lose their national identity. After being based in two European cities and then being finally rebuilt in post-war Munich, the university remains a source of knowledge about Ukraine in Europe. It strives to be an intellectual bridge between Ukraine and European Union states, while also serving as an important center of Ukrainian studies in a German-speaking environment.
