The museum is located in the meadows near the Ciolanu Monastery, in the municipality of Tisău, approx. 33 km from Buzau. It is the result of an unprecedented artistic and cultural project initiated by the sculptor Gheorghe Coman and supported by the Union of Visual Artists in Romania. The project, carried out for 16 years, between 1970 and 1985, marked 16 centuries from Buzău's documentary attestation. During its development, every year 16 artists gathered on the shores of Magura, who with the help of local stonemasons transformed the local stone into works of art. The 256 sculptural groups and statues are the work of 153 Romanian sculptors who donated the result of their work to the Buzău County.
Since 2006, the museum has been managed by the Buzău District Museum.
