Interesting fact
The coin's obverse features a woman personifying Africa facing left, holding a torch in her right hand while her left hand rests upon a globe, inscribed "ALGIERS E LE PROVINCE D ORA CON L EILE SUE NOMINE ET TERRA DELLA" (Algiers and the Province of Oran with their named islands and their land). The reverse shows a sailing ship near the coast, with the inscription "LA PRESENTE RICONOSCENZA DEL MERITI" (The present acknowledgment of merit) above and the date "1852" below, surrounded by laurel leaves. This commemorative medal was issued after the lighting of Algiers, Oran, and surrounding cities in 1852, marking an important step in modernizing the city's infrastructure.
