Pierre Bayle was born on November 18, 1647 in Carla-le-Comte (Ariège, France), and died on December 28, 1706 in Rotterdam (Netherlands)In 1681, as part of the anti-protestant measures, Louis XIV closed the Academy of Sedan and Bayle had to go into exile in the United Provinces. On December 8, 1681, he was appointed professor of philosophy and history at the Illustrious School of Rotterdam. In 1682 he published his famous Letter on the Comet, republished in 1683 under the title of Pensées diverses sur la comète (Various thoughts on the comet), to which were later added an Addition and a Continuation.
