Comment

The July Medal is an honorary award envisioned by Louis-Philippe I to thank those who had helped him overthrow Charles X and establish a constitutional monarchy, the Monarchie de Juillet. Two awards were created for citizens who distinguished themselves during the Trois Glorieuses (July 27, 28 and 29, 1830): the Croix de Juillet and the Médaille de Juillet.

The Médaille de Juillet was created by ordinance on May 13, 1831. It was intended to reward "citizens who performed acts of courage during these days, but whose devotion to the cause of Liberty did not justify the award of the Croix de Juillet". The medal and diploma were awarded to 3,763 recipients. Unlike holders of the Croix de Juillet, those awarded the medal did not have to swear an oath to the King and the Charter. (Wikipedia)
