It was in 1844 in Rochdale (England) that weavers created the first true cooperative (in its contemporary form): the Société des Equitables Pionniers. In Belgium, workers' cooperation essentially took off in Ghent in 1880, where Edouard Anseele founded the Vooruit. The birth of the POB in Brussels on April 5 and 6, 1885 reinforced the development of the cooperative movement in Belgium, with each region or craft guild wanting its own cooperative.
