Comment
A specimen of this medal from the French Government was presented on 8 September 1893 in New York by Auguste Bartholdi to his friend Richard Butler, secretary of the American Committee for the Statue of Liberty. Additional specimens were presented to the other members of the executive committee who had been in charge of erecting the pedestal for the statue.
