The lake of Serre-Ponçon is an artificial lake located in the Hautes-Alpes, in the south of the French Alps, at the limit of the departments of Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. It was created in 1959 by the construction of a dam on the Durance, two kilometers downstream from its confluence with the Ubaye. The hydraulic development is completed by the lake of Espinasses located at the foot of the dam of Serre-Ponçon, from which is fed the EDF canal of the Durance.The establishment of the water plan requires the displacement of more than a thousand people and the destruction of more than 400 buildings. Two villages disappeared under the water, Savines and Ubaye, the latter not being rebuilt. For the first time in France, the public authorities took measures to compensate the expropriated for the damage suffered and not only for the value of the expropriated property.
The communication network was also strongly impacted and this led to the construction of new roads and railroads.
Completed in 1959, the waterworks contribute to the regulation of the floods of the Durance and to the irrigation of Provence and also produce electricity. The lake has also become an important tourist attraction for the region's economy.
