Comment
The arms of Maxime-Joseph-Louis de Valbelle bear quarterly: 1 and 4 Gules, a cross voided, bell-cast and dappled Or; 2 and 3 Gules, a lion Or, armed, langued and crowned Or; overall: Azure, a greyhound Argent gorged with a collar Gules. The Valbelle family originated in La Cadière, Var, in the 15th century. The family was ennobled by the purchase of offices and services rendered in the Navy and Army: in 1690, Louis XIV, in recognition of Louis-Alphonse de Valbelle, ordinary chaplain to the King and Master of His Majesty's oratory, established the land of Montfuron as a marquisate for the benefit of Léon de Valbelle, his elder brother, and his descendants.
The sénéchaussée, a term used mainly in Languedoc and Brittany, is a court analogous to the bailliage. Appeals lie to the Presidial and, if necessary, to the Parliament.
