The Battle of the Dunes was the decisive battle of the Franco-Spanish War (1635-1659). It took place on June 14, 1658, and ended in a victory for the French and English armies - then recently allied - under the command of Viscount de Turenne over the Spanish army of Flanders commanded by the Prince de Condé, who had gone over to Spanish service after the Fronde episode, and Don Juan José of Austria. On June 25, Dunkirk, which was Spanish in the morning and French at noon, was finally English in the evening, as Louis XIV handed it over to the English on the same day, in accordance with the terms of the Franco-English coalition. In 1662, Charles II sold Dunkirk back to Louis XIV, and the town became definitively French. A few days later, Bergues and Furnes fell to the French.
On November 7, 1659, the Treaty of the Pyrenees sealed the peace and put an end to thirty years of war between France and Spain. In 1660, Louis XIV rewarded Turenne with the title of Marshal General of the King's Armies.
