Comment
François Vatable, born in Gamaches, Picardy, in the last years of the 15th century, died in Paris on March 15, 1547. In 1530, François I appointed him to the Hebrew chair at the newly-created Collège de France, which was to replace the University's Greek, Hebrew and Latin courses. Royal favor subsequently granted him the title of Abbot of Bellozane in the diocese of Rouen, with the associated revenues. Bellozane is a house of Premonstratensian canons in the diocese of Rouen. This token, dated to the second quarter of the 16th century, is very rare, as it is rated R3 on the CGB.
