Luis Federico Leloir was a prominent Argentine scientist, recognized primarily for his contributions in the field of biochemistry. He was born on September 6, 1906 in Paris, France, but moved to Argentina at a very young age. Leloir was noted for his research on the mechanisms of carbohydrate biosynthesis, which led him to discover sugar nucleotides, key compounds in the production of energy in cells.
In 1970, Leloir was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of sugar nucleotides and their role in carbohydrate biosynthesis, becoming the third Argentine scientist to receive a Nobel.
In addition to his pioneering work in biochemistry, Leloir was a great educator and mentor, founding the Institute of Biochemical Research in Buenos Aires, which would later bear his name. His legacy continues to influence Argentine and world science. Leloir passed away on December 2, 1987 in Buenos Aires.
