Comment

This was a campaign token of the 1840 presidential election for Martin Van Buren, the incumbent and a founder of the Democratic party. He lost to the Whig candidate William Henry Harrison. He subsequently emerged as an anti-slavery leader and ran as a candidate of the Free Soil Party in the 1848 presidential election.
