Bucegi Mountains range in central Romania, in the south of the Transylvanian Highlands, south of Brașov. They are part of the Southern Carpathians.Of the valleys that cut through them, the Ialomita River is the deepest. In the east, the Bucegi Mountains drop steeply towards the popular tourist valley of the Prahova River (the towns of Buşteni and Sinaia). Above is the Bucegi plateau with meadows rare at these altitudes, where the wind and rain have carved strange shapes in the rocks, such as the Sphinx or Babele. The forest border is lowered to 1400–1500 meters above sea level.
The highest peak of the group is Omu, measuring 2,505 m (according to other sources, 2,507 m or 2,514 m), which houses the highest situated tourist hostel in the Carpathians - Cabana Omu.
It is probably the Bucegi Mountains that are the ancient sacred site of the Dacians. The sacred mountain of Kogainon was supposed to be here, where the mythical Zalmoxis was supposed to live.
A large part of the Bucegi Mountains is a national park, covering an area of 32,534 hectares - a plateau in the southern part and the Ialomita valley, eastern and western cliffs and the Omu region. In the park there are several endangered plants, representatives of Carpathian predators (wolves, bears, wildcats and lynxes) and chamois.
