On July 9, 1892, Basel celebrated the 500th anniversary of the union between Greater Basel (Grossbasel) and and Lesser Basel (Kleinbasel), a historic event that took place in 1392, marking a turning point in the city's development. Grand-Bâle, located on the left bank of the Rhine, was the older and more prestigious part, while Petit-Bâle, on the right bank, was a more modest town (for more information, see Basler Stadtbuch)
