The area in Malheur County Oregon was first explored in 1811 by John Jacob Astor’s overland expedition to Astoria. French-Canadian trappers from the expedition came back through the area in 1813 and 1814 to trap beaver for pelts along the Malheur River. They built a cabin on Willow Creek, near present day Vale. According to local tradition, Indians raided the party and stole their pelts, leaded them to call the area "Malheur," or "bad time."Vale was established in 1883 when a post office was founded, later the community incorporated in 1889. It was the first stop along the Oregon Trail in Oregon.
This token produced by Harry S. Sackett, who owned a billiards and confectionery business from 1940 to 1942 in Vale, Oregon.
