Registration duties and indirect taxes on the royal estate were collected by the fermiers généraux: in return for a lump-sum payment to the Treasury, they collected the taxes on their own behalf.Funds were centralized and accounted for by the king's agents, the Généraux des Finances, and an accounting officer, the Receveur Général.
