The town faces the Bay of Angels, sheltered from the wind by an amphitheatre of hills, in a narrow mountainous basin backed by the Mercantour massif, bounded to the west by the Var valley and to the east by Mount Boron. Nice's first site was the hill of the Château, which was completely militarized before being destroyed by Louis XIV. Nice grew up at the foot of this hill, confining itself to the area between the Paillon and the sea, which today forms the narrow streets of Vieux-Nice. It was especially after the city became part of France that it expanded beyond the river, which is now partially covered. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nice
