On the south side of the square, in the heart of the former Place Charles-Albert, is the "Sun Fountain", inaugurated in 1956. It features five bronze statues sculpted by Alfred Janniot. The choice of a world-renowned architect is a clear indication of the importance to the Côte d'Azur city of embellishing the Place Masséna. All represent characters from Greco-Roman mythology: Earth, Mars, Venus, Mercury and Saturn. At the center of the fountain is a seven-meter-high marble statue of Apollo. It was moved to the Charles Ehrmann sports park in the 1970s, officially because its nudity could shock passers-by. The other statues were dismantled for restoration in 1990 and the fountain was shut down for watertightness reasons. However, very recently, following renovation work on the paving of the square and its transformation with the passage of the tramway, the statue of Apollo made its return on June 20, 2011, resuming its place above the fountain, which has also been restored. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Place_Mass%C3%A9na#Situation%20Exceptionnelle%20Au%20Sein%20de%20La%20Ville
