François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture, originally Toussaint de Bréda, born around 1743 near Cap-Français (present-day Cap-Haitian), and died in captivity on April 7, 1803 in La Cluse-et-Mijoux, in the department of Doubs, France, was a Franco-Haitian1 general and politician of Afro-Caribbean origin.A descendant of black slaves and himself a freedman, he became a slave owner and even owned several plantations. He played a leading historical role during the Haitian Revolution (1791-1802) and became one of the great figures of the emancipation movements of the colonies from their metropolis. Arrested and taken to France, Toussaint Louverture ended his days in 1803, incarcerated in isolation at the Fort de Joux, in the harsh climate of the Doubs, without having been able to know the proclamation of independence of Haiti on January 1, 1804 by his former slave, who became his lieutenant, Jean-Jacques Dessalines.
