The Dunkirk carnival is a group of festivities held in the Dunkirk area around Mardi Gras. There are :- Bands: carnival-goers parade through the streets behind the music (the "clique"), led by a drum major.
- Balls: carnival-goers gather at night, in the town's large halls, to celebrate, mixing carnival songs with contemporary music, for the benefit of associations (les corsaires...).
It's also a time when Dunkirk patois can be heard in full force.
