Leu m'en fouti, sieu d'Auruou! Why did this famous expression become a proverbial saying, at least in Provence?
The explanation can be found in an old oral tale that was a great success. Pierre Bellot (1783-1855), a Provençal poet, wrote a verse version in 1822, entitled Lou predicatour encala (The Bothered Preacher).
The story takes place in Roquevaire ...
The village priest was delivering his customary Sunday sermon, threatening his flock with the worst torments if they continued to wallow in sin (i.e., the pleasures of the flesh...) The flock, who knew the sermon by heart, joked and elbowed each other, laughing without even hiding. The priest raised his voice, became virulent, predicted divine wrath, hellfire for all and, for good measure, a curse on the village for centuries and centuries!
Calm gradually returned to the congregation, allowing our parish priest to hear the snoring of a parishioner who had been blissfully asleep. The curé's blood rushed to his feet, he grabbed his skullcap and threw it at the sleeping man with all his might, shouting "Roco-Vairen sarès touti dana! "(people of Roquevaire, you'll all be damned!).
The other, awakened with a start, had this common-sense response: "leu m'en fouti, sieu d'Auruou! (I don't care, I'm from Auriol!).
The tale was a great success in the region, and the expression was frequently used to make the ironic point that one wasn't concerned by a particular problem, or to avoid taking sides in a conflict...
And that's how we Auriolais have since been humorously likened to "je m'en foutistes! "
The performance of Le Loriot
In the center of the room, you can see a replica of the commune's first coat of arms, dating from 1697, featuring the oriole on a golden background.
The original of this coat of arms can be found on an administrative document in our municipal archives.
All around, a laurel (or olive) wreath follows the outline of our town's 18th-century seal.
This medal is available from the cultural center at the Auriol exit towards Aubagne, accessed via the parking lot.
