The Canso Causeway joins mainland Nova Scotia to Cape Breton Island via the Trans-Canada Highway. Its construction was completed on April 13, 1955 and the causeway officially opened August 13, 1955.Tokens were issued for the 25th anniversary of the causeway in 1980 and were only collected to enter the island. Tolls for the causeway were lifted on December 13, 1991.
The word "canso" is believed to be derived from the Mi'kmaq word "kamsok" which means "opposite the lofty cliffs". These tokens paid for the 23 million dollar cost of construction. There are 6 known varieties.
