In 1944, the Netherlands is about to be liberated. However, it takes until the spring of 1945 before the whole of the Netherlands is liberated. The liberation of the Netherlands starts on September 12, 1944 with the advance of the Americans in Limburg. On September 17, 1944, part of North Brabant and Gelderland was liberated with Operation Market Garden. Nevertheless, Operation Market Garden is not the great success that the Allies had in mind. Partly due to weather conditions and heavy resistance from the German tropics, the Allied offensive near Arnhem foundered. At that time, part of North Brabant, Limburg and Gerderland was already in Allied hands. From this strip of free area, the Allies liberated the rest of Brabant and Limburg in the following months.
On February 8, 1945, a second offensive is launched: Operation Veritable. With an unimaginably large force, the Allies begin an advance towards Germany. Due to the days of rain, the flooding of large areas and the resistance of the Germans, the advance is progressing slowly. The north of the Netherlands is liberated in the spring of 1945.
The German troops in the Netherlands are pushed back and capitulate on May 4 on the Luneburger Heide between Hamburg and Bremen. The official capitulation comes into effect on May 5, 1945. The Netherlands is liberated!
