Comment
Basilica of Ascension of Virgin Mary. One of the most famous pilgrim places in the Czech Republic is closely associated with the Cyril and Method tradition and it was probably the seat of the first Great-Moravian archbishop St. Method. In 1205 the first Cistercian Monastery in Moravia was founded here. Besides the 100 m long basilica - once the biggest church in the country, the pilgrim area includes underground catacombs and a lapidarium with the base of a former sanctuary. In 1985, pope John Paul II. granted „the Golden Rose“ to the Velehrad Basilica – a precious gift which only Lourdes in France, Guadalupe in Mexico and Czestochowa in Poland can boast of.
